The show, as exciting as it is, does not quite depict the trueness of the field of forensics. Crimes just dont get solved in one hour. In reality evidence can take days, weeks, and even months to process. Those who enter this field must have patience, an eagle eye, and a good sense of logic. There is a saying, the sum of the parts is greater than the whole. It is my wish to expose you to a little of each of the pieces that make up the whole topic called forensics. Learning about the parts a little at a time makes the understanding of the whole topic a little easier. I am very excited to finally teach forensics as two half-year classes. Over the past few years I have introduced forensic topics into the Applied Science curriculum, and last year was the debut of a half-year course on the topic, but I have never taught a whole year on just forensics. The first half should go relatively smooth, as I will start with the topics I taught last year. However, the second half may be some trial and error as I find out what works and what doesnt, so bare with me while we work the kinks out. We will spend a lot of time doing activities and labs and solving Who dunnit type labs. We will start with activities such as FACES, which helps law officers create a composite of a suspect. We will also work with crime scenes, hair samples, fingerprinting, bones, and identifying the time of death, ballistics, arson, and other interesting topics. The highlight of the year comes with our virtual tour of an autopsy. More information will be forth coming on this event/ This course has many hands-on activities and I expect you to participate every day. My expectations are as follows: Classroom rules: Be in the room on time. Bring appropriate materials and writing utensils. Be courteous and respectful at all times Homework Policies: Homework will be assigned from the textbook or handouts. It is due the next class period. Assignments are always up on the board. If you are absent, show me your work as soon as you walk through the door when you return. Grading Policies: - homework: 15% - quizzes 20% - laboratory work 15% - test 25% - projects 25% Materials: 3 ring binder pen and/or pencil textbook Absences: If you are absent, you are responsible to make up all work as soon as you get back If you are going to be out for an extended length of time, please call the office to get your work Course Outline (for first half of the year): Chpt. 1: Observation Skills Chpt. 2: Crime-Scene Investigation and Evidence Collection Chpt. 3: The Study of Hair Chpt. 4: The Study of Fibers and Textiles Chpt. 6: Fingerprints Chpt. 8: Blood and Blood Spatter Chpt 11: Death: Meaning, Manner, Mechanism Cause and Time Chpt 13: Forensic Anthropology: What We Learn from Bones Chpt 15: Casts and Impressions I hope you enjoy this course.
