Blackley Provides Plenty Of Offensive Punch For JV Raiders Over Medina

    May 5, 2009
BARKER -- On Tuesday the JV baseball team edged Medina 11-10 in an exciting see-saw battle. Barker trailed during the game by margins of 3-0, 9-4, and 10-9, but rallied three times to tie the game or take the lead. In the bottom of the seventh inning with the score tied at 10, Josh Bergman doubled to left center. Nick Provencher was inserted as a pinch runner and after fly out by Tony Diez and ground out to the right side by Jake Haight he advanced to third. With two down Spencer Moore cashed the winning run on a single to left center.

Barker took a 4-3 lead in the third inning after a double by Moore followed by RBI singles from Austin Blackley and Brett Cole. Zach Shaft then singled and Mitch Luckman grounded out to the right side knocking in the fourth run.

In the fifth inning the Raiders were down again as Moore led off the inning with a single. Blackley reached by and error, Codi McKee singled, Shaft reached by an error, Tim Flint had an RBI single and Diez drove in two with a single. Barker had once again comeback and this time had it tied at nine.

In the sixth Blackley led off with what appeared to be a ground rule double, but the ball was picked up and sent back to the infield before the umpire was able to check the location of the ball under the outfield fence. After it was decided by the umpires that Blackley would have had a chance to score, he was awarded home plate to tie the game at 10.

Blackley swiped two bases. As a team the Raiders pouned out 15 hits. Moore picked up the win on the mound striking out seven while walking none. The team managed to eliminate the large number of strikeouts that has plagued the team throughout the season thus far and cut down on the number of errors and walks they had while on defense to put them in a great position to win. "The boys were really swinging the bats today and played solid defense. If we continue to do that and stay mentally focused, we're going to have an exciting second half of the season," stated Coach Jeff Costello. "Coach Sutch and I have thrown thousands of pitches and soft toss to the guys the past week and they really responded today with that performance at the plate."

Barker is now 2-3 in the league and 4-8 overall. The next game is Thursday at CSAT.
